Feast your eyes on the 2009 ADDY Awards intro video

You were at the ADDYs right?

No? Well that’s a shame. You missed a great ceremony and an even greater party.

Yes? That’s great, but do you remember any of it past the coat check? I don’t. Well, maybe like 10% of it to be honest. The rest of the time I was downing Dundee and stuffing my face with mashed potatoes and candy cigarettes. One thing I do remember is the awesome intro video / animation created and produced by Dumbwaiter Design. Dumbwaiter was asked by the RAF ADDY committee to come up with a video intro for the awards show that reflected the “Mad Men” theme, and what they came up with was truly exceptional. Here’s the intro in its entirety. Hats off to Dumbwaiter yet again.

What’s PR got to do with it?

I was thrilled to have been chosen as a RIF RAF blogging team member. Ever since, I’ve been looking forward to my inaugural blog post. Yet I’ve also been debating what to write about, because I am a PR girl in RAF’s largely advertising world.

It seems there are several misconceptions about what public relations entails, so I thought it made sense to lead with a discussion about the value of our work.

True, public relations often goes unnoticed, but if we’re doing our job correctly, the work of a PR professional should go unnoticed. We are Jacks-of-all-trades, working behind-the-scenes to bring our clients’ news to the attention of their key audiences.

As a matter of fact, the Martino Flynn PR team recently did just that for RAF. In advance of the ADDY Awards tomorrow, we crafted a press release and secured an item in the D&C about the event.

While generating publicity (aka “media relations”) is one facet of public relations, our arsenal of tools allows us to do many things…whether it’s organizing trade shows, ghostwriting byline articles, or even establishing a crisis contingency plan.

Ultimately, PR can be a credible, cost-effective complement to the communications mix—helping a company to foster relationships with its constituents, and position how it is perceived now and in the future.

Local creative goes big. Really, really big.

So there I was in Barnes and Noble, nibbling my scone, sipping my Fiji and fueling my creativity with the October 2008 issue of How. Which just so happens to be the Self-Promotion Annual. And right there on page 94 is our 2008 ADDY Best of Show winner, the Rochester International Jazz Festival press kit created by WXXI in-house team Jon Haliniak and Kristen Tutino. How cool is that?

Another bit of bigness to hit the pubs is John Myers Photography in the Communication Arts Photography Annual. With a full spread for his work on the Boy Scout annual report! Apparently no good deed goes unnoticed.

And speaking of spying big ideas, rumor has it you’ll be able to see some MasterCard work from Roberts Communications in the upcoming 2009 Graphis Advertising Annual. Whit Thompson and Mark Stone are so money with their clever creative. Look for it at the end of the month.

Apparently, creative juices floweth big time down the Genesee River. Go ROC.

SUNY Geneseo Student Wins National ADDY Award

A Student Silver ADDY® is awarded to local Geneseo student Ivan Cash who succeeded against tens of thousands of competitors on a national level.

SUNY Geneseo senior Ivan Cash was recently announced as a 2008 National ADDY® Award winner, earning a Student Silver ADDY®. Conducted by the American Advertising Federation, The ADDYs® are the advertising industry’s largest and most representative competition, attracting over 50,000 entries every year. Before placing at the national level, the campaign advanced through three-tiers, winning at both the local Rochester area level and the subsequent district level, which includes submissions from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Washington D.C. The national award ceremony takes place June 10, in Atlanta, GA.

Silver ADDY Award winning creative by SUNY Geneseo senior Ivan Cash

The winning advertising campaign entails two interactive pieces whose aim is to promote literacy on behalf of the worldwide ProLiteracy organization based in Syracuse, NY. The ads, which are suited to run in a magazine, use folds to juxtapose gibberish words with legible text, giving the illusion of illiteracy that creates a powerful impact. The campaign received a student silver medal at the South African Loerie Awards in July of 2007. Cash, who is a communication major and graphics production minor, is responsible for the art direction and design of the winning campaign, while South African student Logan Broadley, of the Red and Yellow school in Cape Town, served as copywriter. The two students worked together while Cash studied abroad during the 2007 spring semester. Graduating on the 17th of May, Cash has an online portfolio available at www.ivancash.com.

Congratulations Ivan.
